La Furka

A little bit of geography
La Furka (F) is a part of the Saint-Gotthard set of mountains in the Swiss Alps. The Saint-Gotthard pass (G) was a big North-South communication path between Zurich and Milan. Now this pass is not very used because under the mountain there are two tunnels, the first one for the train (dig at the end of the XIXth century) and the second one is an highway. Note that since 1997 a third tunnel is still under construction, the AlpTransit with a 50km length! The Furka pass is the natural border between the Rhone and the Reuss Valley and also between the Valais and Uri cantons.

Un peu de géographie
La Furka (F) fait partie du massif du Saint-Gotthard situé au centre de la Suisse. Le col du saint-Gotthard (G) était un grand axe de communication Nord-Sud entre Zürich et Milan. Aujourd’hui le col n’est plus utilisé que par les touristes car sous la montagne ont été creusés deux tunnels, le premier ferroviaire (percé à la fin du XIXe siècle) et le second autoroutier. A noter que depuis 1997 est en train d’être creusé un troisième tunnel plus à l’est (ferroviaire avec ferroutage) l’AlpTransit long de plus de 50km! La Furka est comme un bouchon naturel entre la haute vallée du Rhône et la vallée de la Reuss et donc entre le Valais et le canton d’Uri.
